The best time to visit Kashmir is during the spring and summer months from April to June when the weather is pleasant, flowers are in bloom, and trekking routes are accessible. September and October offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and vibrant autumn foliage, making them ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The monsoon season is relatively mild compared to other Himalayan regions but sees increased rainfall from July to August, which can disrupt travel. Winters, from November to February, are extremely cold with heavy snowfall, especially in higher altitudes like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, leading to road closures and limited accessibility—best avoided unless visiting for snow-specific activities.
Spring in Kashmir, from March to early June, is marked by gradually warming temperatures and blossoming flora. Meadows begin to green, almond and cherry blossoms appear in the valleys, and the weather becomes increasingly pleasant for trekking and sightseeing. This season offers clear mornings and mild days, making it one of the most scenic times to explore places like Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and Srinagar's Mughal gardens.
Summer, from mid-June to August, brings warm but comfortable days with temperatures averaging 20–30°C in the valleys. It's the peak trekking season, with routes like the Great Lakes and Amarnath Yatra in full operation. However, occasional rainfall increases in July and August, affecting trail conditions. The higher altitudes remain cool, offering relief from the plains' heat.
Kashmir experiences a relatively subdued monsoon compared to the rest of India, but July and August see increased cloud cover and regular rainfall, particularly in the afternoons. While the landscape turns lush, landslides can disrupt road connectivity, and outdoor activities may be interrupted. The monsoon is not as intense as in the western Himalayas, but travelers should remain cautious about itinerary changes.
Autumn, from September to October, is characterized by crisp air, clear skies, and stunning golden and red hues across the chinar and walnut trees. Temperatures gradually drop but remain comfortable during the day. This is an excellent time for photography, cultural tours, and shorter treks. The post-monsoon clarity enhances views of the Himalayan ranges and alpine lakes.
Winters in Kashmir, from November to February, are harsh and cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, especially in higher elevations. Gulmarg becomes a hub for skiing and snowboarding due to heavy snowfall, but most high-altitude treks remain closed. Srinagar and other valley towns experience frost and fog, and some roads may be blocked due to snow. Travel during this season is recommended only for snow enthusiasts with proper planning.
