Route planning

Use the approach page to remove friction before it shows up in the trip.

Mountain planning gets materially better when the access logic is clear: road leg, rail or air entry point, and what the last stretch really asks of you.

Read road, rail, and air as planning inputs, not isolated options.
Use road conditions and live updates if the destination is weather-sensitive.
Finalize stays only after the approach feels workable.

RoadBy road

By Road: Reaching Spiti Valley

Traveling by road is the most common and scenic way to reach Spiti Valley, with two primary routes originating from Delhi — via Manali and via Shimla. Both offer breathtaking Himalayan vistas but differ in accessibility, duration, and seasonal viability.

Route 1: Delhi → Manali → Kaza (Spiti)

  • Distance: 180 km (Manali to Kaza)
  • Duration: 12–13 hours
  • Route: NH3 → Atal Tunnel → Rohtang Pass → Kunzum Pass → Kaza
  • Best Time: June to September

This route is open for only four to five months annually, typically from late May or early June to October, due to heavy snowfall closing Rohtang and Kunzum Passes in winter. The journey from Delhi to Manali (~540 km) takes 10–12 hours, followed by the high-altitude leg to Kaza.

Key Notes:

  • Rohtang Pass requires a permit and toll (₹1,200 + ₹200 pass fee).
  • Inner Line Permit (ILP) mandatory for Spiti entry.
  • Acclimatize in Manali (3,200 m) before ascending further.
  • Fuel up in Manali; limited facilities en route.

Route 2: Delhi → Shimla → Kaza (Spiti)

  • Distance: 450 km (Shimla to Kaza)
  • Duration: 2 days
  • Route: NH5 → Rampur → Jeori → Tapri → Kaza
  • Best Time: Year-round (road remains open)

More gradual and accessible throughout the year, this route is ideal for those avoiding seasonal closures. The road is well-maintained up to Tapri and becomes rougher beyond. An overnight stop at Kalpa or Reckong Peo is recommended.

Key Notes:

  • No high-altitude pass closures; preferred in shoulder seasons.
  • Fuel and basic services available in Shimla and Kaza.
  • ATM access limited in Spiti; carry sufficient cash.

Road Travel Tips

  • Best Months: May to September for optimal weather and open roads.
  • Avoid: December to February due to extreme cold and road closures.
  • Vehicle: Use sturdy SUVs or bikes with high ground clearance.
  • Driving Safety: Avoid night driving; carry emergency supplies, first aid, and warm clothing.
  • Mobile Connectivity: Limited to patchy; BSNL network most reliable.
  • Eco-Practice: Follow “leave no trace” principles; dispose of waste responsibly.
AirBy air

By Air: Nearest Airport to Spiti

There is no operational airport in Spiti Valley. The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar), located approximately 50 km from Manali and about 230 km from Kaza.

  • Flight Connectivity: Regular flights from Delhi to Bhuntar (KUU), operated by Alliance Air and other regional carriers.
  • Post-Flight Journey: From Bhuntar, hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Kaza via Rohtang and Kunzum Passes (12–14 hours depending on road conditions).
  • Seasonal Access: Flights may be disrupted during winter (December–February) due to fog and snow.

Due to high-altitude terrain and weather constraints, air travel is only the first leg — road travel remains essential to reach Spiti.

RailBy rail

By Rail: Nearest Railhead to Spiti

There is no railway line in Spiti Valley. The nearest railhead is Joginder Nagar Railway Station, located approximately 180 km from Manali.

  • Connectivity: Narrow-gauge line with limited service; not practical for most travelers.
  • From Station to Spiti: Long, winding road journey via Mandi, Kullu, and Manali (total travel time over 18 hours).

Most visitors opt for road travel from major rail hubs like Chandigarh (250 km from Delhi), which is well-connected to Delhi and other Indian cities, followed by a road journey to Spiti via Manali or Shimla.
