Traveling by road is the most common and scenic way to reach Spiti Valley, with two primary routes originating from Delhi — via Manali and via Shimla. Both offer breathtaking Himalayan vistas but differ in accessibility, duration, and seasonal viability.
This route is open for only four to five months annually, typically from late May or early June to October, due to heavy snowfall closing Rohtang and Kunzum Passes in winter. The journey from Delhi to Manali (~540 km) takes 10–12 hours, followed by the high-altitude leg to Kaza.
Key Notes:
More gradual and accessible throughout the year, this route is ideal for those avoiding seasonal closures. The road is well-maintained up to Tapri and becomes rougher beyond. An overnight stop at Kalpa or Reckong Peo is recommended.
Key Notes:
There is no operational airport in Spiti Valley. The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar), located approximately 50 km from Manali and about 230 km from Kaza.
Due to high-altitude terrain and weather constraints, air travel is only the first leg — road travel remains essential to reach Spiti.
There is no railway line in Spiti Valley. The nearest railhead is Joginder Nagar Railway Station, located approximately 180 km from Manali.
Most visitors opt for road travel from major rail hubs like Chandigarh (250 km from Delhi), which is well-connected to Delhi and other Indian cities, followed by a road journey to Spiti via Manali or Shimla.
