Shimla is well-connected by road to major cities in North India. National Highway 5 (NH5) links Shimla to Chandigarh (approx. 115 km), which serves as a major transit hub. Regular state-run and private buses operate from Chandigarh, Delhi (approx. 375 km), and nearby hill towns. The drive from Chandigarh takes about 3–4 hours, while from Delhi it takes 8–10 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. Roads are generally in good condition, though caution is advised during monsoon and winter due to landslides and snow.
There is no airport in Shimla. Visitors must fly to the nearest operational airport and continue by road. The journey from the nearest airport to Shimla takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by vehicle, depending on traffic and road conditions.
The Kalka–Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a historic narrow-gauge route that connects Kalka to Shimla. The journey takes about 5–6 hours and offers scenic views of the Himalayas, making it a popular experience for travelers. Regular passenger trains, including the Himalayan Queen, operate on this route.
