Route planning

Use the approach page to remove friction before it shows up in the trip.

Mountain planning gets materially better when the access logic is clear: road leg, rail or air entry point, and what the last stretch really asks of you.

Read road, rail, and air as planning inputs, not isolated options.
Use road conditions and live updates if the destination is weather-sensitive.
Finalize stays only after the approach feels workable.

How to approach Manali

The cards separate transport modes cleanly and then support them with the critical nearest-connection details.

RoadBy road

By Road: Delhi to Manali (Primary Route)

The most common and well-connected route from Delhi to Manali spans 570 km and takes 13–15 hours by road, depending on traffic and weather. The journey follows a seamless highway network:

  • Route: Delhi → NH44 → Chandigarh → NH21 (now part of NH3) → Mandi → Aut Tunnel → Manali
  • Key Stops & Distances from Delhi:
    • Chandigarh: ~250 km
    • Mandi: ~470 km
    • Kullu: ~520 km
    • Manali: 570 km

Road Conditions & Driving Tips

  • Highway Quality: The stretch from Delhi to Mandi is mostly 4-lane, well-maintained highway. From Mandi to Manali (~50 km), the road becomes a winding 2-lane mountain route with sharp curves, ascents, and occasional landslide-prone zones.
  • Monsoon (July–September): Avoid due to landslides, fog, and road closures. Travel risk is high.
  • Winter (December–February): Expect snowfall on higher stretches. Carry snow chains and check for Rohtang Pass closure. The Aut Tunnel helps bypass delays.
  • Daylight Driving: Strongly advised. Avoid night driving beyond Mandi due to poor lighting, fog, and sharp turns.

Essential Tips

  • Vehicle: Use a stable SUV or hatchback with good ground clearance. Avoid low-slung cars.
  • Breaks: Stop at Chandigarh, Kiratpur, or Mandi for rest and fuel.
  • Fuel Up: Fill tank at Mandi or Kullu—fuel stations are sparse near Manali.
  • Navigation: Use offline Google Maps or Maps.me. Check Himachal Pradesh Traffic Police alerts for real-time blockages.
  • Permits: Not required for Manali. However, trekkers heading to Spiti or Leh need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), available in Manali.

Alternative Route (Scenic but Not Recommended)

  • Delhi → Kalka → Shimla → Sangla → Kullu → Manali
  • Over 700 km, extremely winding, and often closed in winter. Best avoided for standard travel.
AirBy air

By Air: Nearest Airport to Manali

Manali does not have its own airport. The closest operational airport is Kullu–Manali Airport (Bhuntar Airport), located in Bhuntar, approximately 50 km from Manali town.

  • Flight Connectivity: Limited daily flights from Delhi operated by airlines like Air India and Deccan Charter.
  • Travel from Airport to Manali: The drive from Bhuntar Airport to Manali takes 2–2.5 hours via NH3, passing through Kullu. The road is narrow and winding—exercise caution.
  • Weather Impact: Flights are frequently delayed or canceled due to fog and high winds, especially in winter and monsoon. Always have a flexible schedule.
RailBy rail

By Rail: Nearest Railhead to Manali

There is no direct railway line to Manali. The nearest railhead is Joginder Nagar Railway Station, but it is not well-connected. The most practical rail access is via Chandigarh Railway Station, located 300 km from Manali.

  • From Chandigarh to Manali: Regular buses and taxis available. Journey takes 8–9 hours by road via NH44 and NH3.
  • Another Option: Pathankot Junction (190 km from Mandi) is sometimes used, but road connectivity is less optimal compared to Chandigarh.
Nearest airport/Kullu–Manali Airport (Bhuntar Airport) - 50 km
Nearest railhead/Chandigarh Railway Station - 300 km
