Route planning

Use the approach page to remove friction before it shows up in the trip.

Mountain planning gets materially better when the access logic is clear: road leg, rail or air entry point, and what the last stretch really asks of you.

Read road, rail, and air as planning inputs, not isolated options.
Use road conditions and live updates if the destination is weather-sensitive.
Finalize stays only after the approach feels workable.

Planning note

Access clarity reduces downstream mistakes.

A useful destination guide does not stop at inspiration. It helps the approach feel legible before dates or bookings get locked in.

RoadBy road

By Road to Leh

Leh is connected to major regional hubs via two primary highways, both offering dramatic Himalayan scenery but subject to seasonal closures due to snow and landslides.

Srinagar–Leh Highway (434 km)

  • Distance: 434 km
  • Duration: 2–3 days
  • Route: Srinagar → Sonamarg → Dras (one of the coldest inhabited places) → Kargil → Fotu La → Leh
  • Best for: Scenic valleys, river views, and gradual altitude gain
  • Open: Typically from June to November
  • Note: Prone to landslides; check real-time status before departure. Acclimatization stops at Dras or Kargil are strongly advised.

Manali–Leh Highway (500 km)

  • Distance: 500 km
  • Duration: 2–3 days (overnight journey common)
  • Route: Manali → Rohtang Pass → Keylong → Baralacha La → Tanglang La (one of the world’s highest motorable passes) → Leh
  • Best for: High-altitude adventure and rugged terrain
  • Open: Seasonally, usually May to October
  • Note: Challenging road conditions; not recommended for inexperienced drivers. Carry extra fuel, food, and warm clothing.

Longer Routes from Delhi

  • Via Srinagar: ≈980 km (3–4 days)
    • Route: Delhi → Jammu → Srinagar → Leh (NH44 → NH1)
    • Ideal for combining Kashmir and Ladakh in one trip
  • Via Manali: ≈1,100 km (4+ days)
    • Route: Delhi → Manali → Leh (NH3)
    • Preferred by adventure and bike travelers

Road Travel Tips

  • Roads are paved but narrow, with frequent snow or landslide closures
  • Night driving is not recommended in mountain stretches
  • Always check real-time road status before departure
  • Carry sufficient fuel, food, water, and warm clothing
  • Acclimatize for at least 24 hours in Leh before venturing to higher altitudes
AirBy air

By Air to Leh

The fastest and most convenient way to reach Leh is by air, especially for travelers seeking to minimize altitude exposure and travel time.

  • Flights operate from major Indian cities including Delhi, Jammu, and Srinagar
  • Flight duration: ~1.5 hours from Delhi
  • Airlines: Air India, GoFirst, IndiGo, and Alliance Air
  • Best time to fly: May to October for maximum schedule reliability
  • Note: Flights are frequently delayed or canceled due to high winds and unpredictable mountain weather. Allow a buffer day in your itinerary.

Travelers arriving by air should still spend at least 24 hours resting in Leh to acclimatize before undertaking any excursions.
