The best time to visit Keylong is during the summer months of May and June, and the clear, crisp days of September and October. These periods offer stable weather, accessible roads, and pleasant daytime temperatures ideal for sightseeing and trekking. The monsoon season from July to mid-October brings heavy rainfall in surrounding regions, causing landslides and road blockages, particularly along the Manali-Leh highway. Winters are extremely cold with heavy snowfall, making travel difficult and many high-altitude routes impassable.
Spring in Keylong, from March to May, sees gradually warming temperatures after the harsh winter. Days become pleasant, ranging between 10°C to 18°C, while nights remain cold. Snow begins to melt at lower elevations, revealing scenic landscapes. This is a good time for preparing for summer treks, though higher passes remain snowbound until late May.
Summer, from June to mid-September, is the most comfortable season in Keylong, with daytime temperatures averaging between 15°C and 20°C. The weather is mostly clear and ideal for travel, photography, and trekking. However, the latter part of summer overlaps with the monsoon in the Indian plains, although Keylong itself lies in the rain shadow zone and receives less rainfall.
While Keylong lies in the rain shadow of the Pir Panjal range and does not receive heavy monsoon rains like other parts of India, July and August can still experience occasional cloudbursts and increased landslide risk on connecting roads such as the Leh-Manali Highway. The monsoon season is generally best avoided due to potential travel disruptions, even though local precipitation remains relatively low.
Autumn, from September to early November, brings clear skies, cool days, and cold nights. Visibility is excellent, making it perfect for photography and high-altitude travel. September and early October are particularly favorable, with stable weather and post-monsoon landscapes at their most dramatic. Temperatures range from 10°C during the day to near freezing at night.
Winter in Keylong, from late November to February, is severe, with temperatures often dropping below -15°C at night. Heavy snowfall isolates many villages and blocks high passes, including Rohtang and Baralacha La. The town remains accessible by road only intermittently, depending on snow clearance. Winter travel is recommended only for experienced high-altitude travelers with proper gear and preparation.
