The best time to visit Jammu, especially for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, is during the summer months from March to June when the weather is pleasant and ideal for the 12-kilometer trek from Katra to the Bhawan. The Navratri festivals, occurring twice a year (usually in March–April and September–October), are peak periods with heavy footfall due to religious significance. September and October post-monsoon also offer clear skies and comfortable temperatures. It is advisable to avoid the monsoon months of July and August, as heavy rains can cause landslides along the Jammu-Srinagar highway and make trekking conditions difficult. Winter (November–February) is suitable for visiting hill stations like Patnitop for snow experiences, but higher areas may become inaccessible due to snow.
Spring in Jammu, from March to early April, brings mild and pleasant weather with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C. This season is ideal for pilgrimage and outdoor activities, especially at Vaishno Devi, as the climate is comfortable for the 12-kilometer trek. The landscape becomes greener, and days are mostly sunny, making it a favored time for visitors.
Summers, from May to June, are warm but manageable, with temperatures in Jammu city averaging 25°C to 35°C. At higher altitudes like Katra and Patnitop, the weather remains cooler and more comfortable. This period is one of the most popular for the Vaishno Devi yatra, and pilgrims are advised to start treks early in the morning to avoid heat. Ample sunlight and clear mountain views enhance the travel experience.
The monsoon season, from July to September, brings heavy rainfall to the Jammu region, especially in the hills. Lush greenery emerges, but the damp and slippery conditions make the trek to Vaishno Devi challenging. Landslides on NH44 between Jammu and Katra are common, disrupting travel. While the rains relieve the summer heat, they limit outdoor and adventure activities in Patnitop and Nathatop.
Autumn, from late September to November, offers stable weather with clear skies and moderate temperatures. It is an excellent time for pilgrimage and sightseeing, with comfortable daytime conditions in Jammu and Katra. The post-monsoon landscape remains fresh, and viewpoints like Nathatop and Patnitop provide excellent visibility of the Himalayan ranges.
Winters, from December to February, are cool to cold, with temperatures in Jammu city ranging from 2°C to 15°C. Higher-altitude destinations like Patnitop and Nathatop receive snowfall, transforming into winter attractions for snow lovers. While the Vaishno Devi trek continues year-round, pilgrims should prepare for cold conditions, especially at the Bhawan (5,200 ft) and Bhairavnath Temple (6,500 ft). Warm clothing is essential, and early registration is recommended during peak pilgrimage days.
