Route planning

Use the approach page to remove friction before it shows up in the trip.

Mountain planning gets materially better when the access logic is clear: road leg, rail or air entry point, and what the last stretch really asks of you.

Read road, rail, and air as planning inputs, not isolated options.
Use road conditions and live updates if the destination is weather-sensitive.
Finalize stays only after the approach feels workable.

A useful destination guide does not stop at inspiration. It helps the approach feel legible before dates or bookings get locked in.

Guide

How to approach Bir

The cards separate transport modes cleanly and then support them with the critical nearest-connection details.

RoadBy road

By Road to Bir

The most reliable and scenic way to reach Bir, Himachal Pradesh, is by road via NH5, connecting major hubs like Dharamshala (85 km) and Shimla (220 km). The route from Delhi → Chandigarh (NH44) → Bir (NH5) covers approximately 520 km and takes 11–13 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

The road is well-paved until the final 30 km, where it becomes narrow and winding through the Joginder Nagar Valley. These last stretches offer breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar range but require cautious driving—especially during monsoon or winter.

Key Road Travel Tips:

  • Avoid night driving due to sharp turns and limited lighting
  • Check road conditions before departure—especially from June to September when landslides are common
  • Carry essential supplies: water, snacks, first-aid kit, and warm layers
  • Auto-rickshaws, taxis, and shared jeeps are readily available within Bir for local access to sites like the Bir Landing Site (1 km away), Palpung Sherabling Monastery (6 km), and the Bir-Biling Takeoff Site (12 km)
  • The Billing road (NH5–NH5B) is accessible from Bir and leads to the paragliding launch site—open from May to September
AirBy air

By Air to Bir

There is no airport in Bir. The nearest operational airport is Kangra Airport (Gaggal Airport), located 85 km away from Bir. This airport connects to major cities like Delhi via regular flights operated by Air India, IndiGo, and Alliance Air.

From Kangra Airport, hire a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to reach Bir—the drive takes 2–2.5 hours via NH5. Given the mountainous terrain, flights may be delayed or canceled during poor weather, especially in monsoon (July–September) and winter (December–February). Always confirm flight status before departure.

RailBy rail

By Rail to Bir

Bir does not have a railway station. The nearest railhead is Pathankot Junction, located 110 km away. It is well-connected to major cities including Delhi, Amritsar, and Chandigarh.

From Pathankot, travelers must continue by road. Hire a taxi or take a bus to Dharamshala or directly to Bir—this journey takes 3–4 hours depending on road conditions. Another rail option is Joginder Nagar Railway Station (75 km) on the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway, but services are infrequent and best suited for scenic travel rather than convenience.

Nearest airport/Kangra Airport (Gaggal Airport) - 85 km
